The collection contains a letter from William Wirt to an unidentified correspondent, 1824 January 23, concerning a legal fee and a client named Roberts who treated him shabbily. Letter, 1828 April 11, Agnes S.B. Gamble Cabell (sister in law of William Wirt) to Anna Reid, in French, with obituary of Mrs. Cabell pasted on attached leaf. The letter sends family news, discusses her French lessons, and mentions the Bowery Theater fire. Letter, 1867 December 12, D.C. Wirt to Edward E. Cooke concerning property abutting the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and on the Potomac. William Wirt (November 8, 1772 – February 18, 1834) was an American author and statesman who is credited with turning the position of United States Attorney General into one of influence. Charles Campbell (1807-1876) was born on 1 May 1807, in Petersburg, Virginia, the firstborn child of parents John Wilson Campbell (d.1842), and Mildred Walker Moore Campbell. John, a bookstore owner, was also a historian. In 1831 he published the History of Virginia to 1781 . Later, he held the position of Federal Collector of Customs in Petersburg, Virginia.
